Building Competencies

The underlying goal of everything we do at Meeting Street is to build competencies in our children, young adults, and their families. From making a treat for their classmates to share, to remembering to return a library book, to fishing with friends, we generate opportunities for our students and the children we serve to develop skills and abilities that foster independence as they strive to achieve their maximum potential.

We firmly believe that all individuals have the right to actively participate and to contribute, and deserve the opportunity to discover and develop their talents and strengths.

From our work site opportunities for our Carter School students to the family education and empowerment supports provided through Meeting Street Early Intervention and The Children's Network, our goal is to help children, young adults and their families expand their horizons and achieve the highest quality of life.

Our highly skilled and dedicated educators and clinicians are constantly seeking new and innovative ways to provide greater opportunities for children and young adults with disabilities or developmental delays to pursue their goals and participate fully in the daily activities and diversions of life.

We are committed to providing meaningful learning opportunities and experiences. For instance, we may help a child master the skills of distinguishing size and shape by sorting silverware and placing it in a slotted tray rather than using a more traditional shape organizer. This way, he or she can help put away the silverware at home and make a meaningful contribution to the family. Or a student might work on grasping and pulling skills while fishing with friends rather than tugging a rope in a more traditional therapy session.

The end result may be the same, but the level of satisfaction and joy of contributing and belonging gained through the experience, are monumentally different.
